He was told he would get playing time and he ended up sitting on the bench. He is nearing the end of his career. If I was him I  wouldn't want to sit there watching the kids do something I love doing. He was sitting there waiting for what might never happen. He has done more for that team possibly more than any other steeler. He went to a team that is in serious need of a guy with his skill set. Hightower's injury and other injuries have put them in a serious hole. Hightower has helped save the patriots in two super bowls. We've had to deal with some loss of favorite players like Vinatieri and Ty Law both to huge rivals. one of which was a division rival but we cheered for them none the less. Just consider what he has done is all I am saying :) Good Luck in the playoffs.
