Did Cowboys Overpay For Amari Cooper? It Doesn't Matter, They Were Checkmated

The big news of the day for Cowboys fans is the trade for Amari Cooper in return for a 1st round draft pick.
Much of the conversation is already dominated by "did the Cowboys overpay?"
The question is irrelevant and we won't know the answers for years. The more important question is "could the Cowboys afford not to make this move?
The answer to that question, quite clearly, is no. The sputtering offense shows no signs of being able to improve with the current arsenal. There is simply too much reliance on Zeke, with a sprinkling of Cole ... and that simply isn't enough as the Reskins clearly demonstrated when they all out committed to stopping Zeke.
With the NFC East still up for grabs without a clear dominant player, the Cowboys had no choice but to make this move after failing to retain both Dez Bryant and Jason Witten this year.
Quite frankly, the Cowboys insistence that they could make up for those losses with the current crop was a joke, if not an outright fantasy. Jason and Dez (even in his diminished capacity) were monsters that provided plenty for opposing defences to worry about.
When you negligently lose a knight and bishop in chess, you're on your way to checkmate. Realizing the miscalculation, the Cowboys had no choice but to bring in a critical chess piece to avoid being checkmated over the next 3-4 weeks.
Let the battle begin.
